Change Matters, which began as a pilot project at Howard High School in 2008, has raised over $100,000 to fund programs and services at Grassroots. Change Matters funds have come from student-led campaigns at local high, middle and elementary schools. Contributions have been used to develop the Grassroots Children’s Playground & Garden at the crisis center offices and shelter in Columbia.

The Change Matters celebration will highlight some of the most original and successful school campaigns and will include award presentations to outstanding educators and student leaders. Entertainment will be provided by Bethel Emmanuel Youth Orchestra, now in its twelfth season. The orchestra has an extensive community outreach effort and has performed for people with disabilities, older adults and new immigrants. A reception and refreshments will conclude the event.

The Change Matters 5th Anniversary Celebration is open to the public. There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted. Ellicott Mills Middle School is located at 4445 Montgomery Road. For information, contact cathyvsmith@verizon.net.
