November 8, 7-8:30 p.m., Oakland Mills High School — Suicide Prevention Program — Leadership U Howard County will host a short film and expert panel discussion focusing on what can be done to help teens who are struggling with depression or contemplating suicide. The event is free and open to the public. Among those participating in the panel discussion are Amanda Ganoe of Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Juli Murray of Inquiring Minds LLC, Hayley Kline LCSW, representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and representatives from the Howard County Health Department.
November 10, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Swim Center, Supreme Sports Club and Columbia Gym — Columbia Association Give Thanks Open House — Join any annual CA facility or Haven on the Lake membership during November (including during the Open House) and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Grassroots. CA will also be collecting food for the Grassroots Day Resource Center during November at the Swim Center, Columbia Gym and Supreme Sports Club. November 10-18 — National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week — Grassroots and the Community Action Council of Howard County encourage their supporters to recognize poverty in our community by donating items to the Howard County Food Bank, 8920 Route 108, #A, and making personal financial contributions to support programs and services for people in crisis.
November 10-18 — Breakfast for Grassroots Food Drive In recognition of National Hunger & Homelessness Week, Grassroots is calling upon the community to join the “Breakfast for Grassroots” campaign to feed shelter residents. Grassroots prepares approximately 20,000 breakfasts each year for men, women and children in the emergency and winter sheltering program. Needed food items include:
- large size apple and grape juices
- individual servings of instant hot chocolate
- cans of ground coffee
- creamer and sugar
- English muffins
- jams and jellies
- cereal and individual packages of oatmeal
- granola bars
- individual apple sauces.
November 16, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., NonProfit Collaborative of Howard County — 9th Annual Suicide Prevention Symposium — A Suicide Attempt Survivor Panel is included in the annual symposium designed to increase awareness of suicide as a public health issue. November 16, 5:30-8 p.m., November 17, noon-3 p.m., Oliver’s Carriage House at Kittamaqundi Community Church — Willowbrook Studio’s Annual Art Show — Watercolors, acrylics, miniatures, mixed media, sculpture, fiber art, cards and pen and ink drawings will be featured at the art show and sale which is open to the public. Monday, November 26, 5-7 p.m., Seasons 52 — Women Leaders for Grassroots — For the fourth year in a row, the Monday after Thanksgiving is the date for a holiday social to benefit Grassroots. This year’s gathering will feature Seasons 52 specialties, and Decanter Fine Wines will again provide a variety of holiday wines for sampling. Executive Director Ayesha Holmes will give an update about shelter services, suicide prevention, and efforts regarding opioid addiction. Tickets are $65. Sponsor tickets are $100 each. Tuesday, November 27 — Giving Tuesday The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated “Giving Tuesday,” to remind people that in the midst of the plenty epitomized by Thanksgiving, there are many who suffer. Share your good fortune with the people served by Grassroots by making a donation.
