September is Suicide Prevention Month

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month – and every month – Grassroots Crisis Intervention encourages community members to learn how they can help individuals who might be feeling suicidal. The number #1 thing to know: Call Grassroots for help on our free, 24-hour crisis line at 410-531-6677.

Crisis Line Callers can contact the Grassroots Crisis Line at 410-531-6677 anytime for a variety of issues, including thoughts of suicide, family and relationship problems, housing needs, loneliness or depression, substance use issues and more. Grassroots also serves as a call center for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a national network that provides free and confidential 24-hour support via call, text or chat. Last year, Grassroots provided crisis line support to 72,949 people in distress.

Grassroots is also one of the local programs in the State of Maryland to provide the Maryland 211 Crisis Program, which responds to people in the region who are coping with mental health issues. In addition, Grassroots is also a partner for the 211 Health Check Program.

Mental Health Grassroots provides additional 24-hour crisis intervention, mental health, substance use disorder, emergency shelter and suicide prevention services. This includes free walk-in counseling, crisis stabilization, Peer Recovery Specialist services and access to resources, outreach and education, and more – all of which is vital in helping those who are at-risk in our community.

Mobile Crisis Response Two teams of Grassroots clinicians are available to respond on-site to urgent calls, including assisting individuals who might have expressed thoughts of suicide, as well as providing immediate support to families where someone has died by suicide. Last year, Mobile Crisis Response responded to 1,278 community emergencies.

Support for Survivors Grassroots also provides long-term support for people who have lost a loved one to suicide through Survivors of Suicide Loss, a free and confidential support group that helps survivors cope with the tragedy and grief of losing a loved one to suicide.
